Sri Lanka Navy Seizes Over 100 Kilograms of Heroin and Crystal Methamphetamine in Major Drug Bust

The Sri Lanka Navy has once again demonstrated its commitment to combating drug trafficking with a significant maritime operation resulting in the seizure of more than 100 kilograms of heroin and crystal methamphetamine (ICE). Acting on credible intelligence, naval forces intercepted a local multi-day fishing trawler engaged in smuggling narcotics in Sri Lankan waters.
The operation, conducted in collaboration with the Police Narcotic Bureau, led to the discovery of the drugs meticulously concealed aboard the vessel. This seizure adds to a series of successful interdictions by the Navy in recent months, including a record haul in April involving over 800 kilograms of heroin and methamphetamine.
The Sri Lanka Navy has intensified its efforts to clamp down on narcotics smuggling, working closely with regional law enforcement and international partners to disrupt criminal networks exploiting maritime routes. Since early 2024, the Navy has confiscated hundreds of kilograms of heroin, methamphetamine, and cannabis, alongside arresting numerous suspects involved in drug trafficking.
A Navy spokesperson reaffirmed the country’s zero-tolerance policy on drug smuggling, stating, “No illegal substances, particularly narcotics, will be allowed to enter the country via sea routes. Smuggling disguised as fishing operations will be met with strict action.”
This latest bust underscores the ongoing challenges Sri Lanka faces as a transit hub for illicit drugs and highlights the Navy’s pivotal role in safeguarding national security and public health.
