Strengthening Ties: Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka’s Historic Visit to Vietnam"
President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka of Sri Lanka commenced a historic state visit to Vietnam on May 4, 2025, marking the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. The visit, which lasts until May 6, was undertaken at the invitation of Vietnamese President Luong Cuong and is the first by a Sri Lankan head of state to Vietnam in 16 years, as well as President Dissanayaka's first visit since taking office in September 2024.
Upon arrival in Hanoi, President Dissanayaka was welcomed by high-ranking Vietnamese officials, including Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Ethnic and Religious Affairs, as well as ambassadors from both countries. The visit underscores the traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation between Sri Lanka and Vietnam, with Sri Lanka recognizing Vietnam's status as a full market economy and viewing it as a model for economic development.
The state visit includes high-level talks and meetings with Vietnam's President, Prime Minister, and senior dignitaries such as the General Secretary of the Communist Party. Several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements are expected to be signed to enhance bilateral cooperation in political, economic, cultural, and other sectors. Discussions will also involve the Vietnamese business community to explore avenues for increased trade and investment.
President Dissanayaka will also serve as the Chief Guest and keynote speaker at the 20th United Nations Day of Vesak Celebrations in Ho Chi Minh City from May 6 to 8, highlighting the deep Buddhist and cultural ties between the two countries.
Vietnamese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Trinh Thi Tam emphasized that the visit represents a new chapter in bilateral relations, aiming to intensify cooperation in areas such as agriculture, fisheries, culture, education, tourism, technology, renewable energy, and digital economy. The two countries plan to enhance collaboration in trade, investment, defense, security, and people-to-people exchanges, while also exploring new fields like AI, e-commerce, and logistics to adapt to evolving regional and international contexts.
This visit reaffirms the respect and importance both countries place on their longstanding friendship and partnership, contributing to peace, development, and prosperity in the region.
