Tragic Bus Crash in Sri Lanka Claims 21 Lives, Injures Over 35

On Sunday, May 11, 2025, a devastating bus accident occurred in Sri Lanka’s Central Province near the town of Kotmale, resulting in the deaths of at least 21 people and injuries to more than 35 others. The bus, carrying around 75 passengers plunged approximately 100 meters off a cliff while traveling from the southern pilgrimage site of Kataragama to the northwestern town of Kurunegala.

The accident took place early in the morning on the mountainous Nuwara Eliya–Gampola main road, a route known for its sharp bends and steep drops. Eyewitnesses and survivors reported that the bus began tilting to one side as it navigated a curve, and the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and crash into a tea plantation below.

Local residents played a crucial role in the immediate rescue efforts, pulling survivors from the wreckage and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals. Authorities confirmed that 24 injured passengers are currently receiving treatment across two regional medical facilities.

Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways, Prasanna Gunasena, expressed condolences and noted that the death toll might have been higher if not for the swift actions of locals. The government has launched an official investigation to determine the cause of the crash, focusing on whether driver error or mechanical failure was responsible.

This tragedy highlights the ongoing challenges Sri Lanka faces with road safety. According to police data, nearly 600 people have died in 565 fatal road accidents so far this year, with buses frequently involved. The government has pledged to enhance enforcement of traffic laws and implement new driver awareness programs under the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative to prevent such incidents in the future.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake expressed deep shock over the accident and extended sympathies to the families of the victims, assuring that all necessary medical and support services are being provided to the injured.

As the nation mourns the loss of life, this incident underscores the urgent need for improved road safety measures on Sri Lanka’s treacherous mountain roads to protect travelers and pilgrims alike.
