Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake Begins Landmark State Visit to Germany

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake arrived in Berlin today, commencing a pivotal three-day official visit to the Federal Republic of Germany at the invitation of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The visit, spanning June 11 to 13, is set to deepen economic and diplomatic ties between the two nations and marks a significant step in Sri Lanka’s international engagement strategy.

Warm Welcome and High-Level Talks

President Dissanayake touched down at Berlin Brandenburg International Airport, where he was warmly received by German officials and members of the Sri Lankan diplomatic mission. The President’s itinerary includes high-level discussions with President Steinmeier, the German Chancellor, and key members of the Federal Government. These talks are expected to focus on expanding cooperation in priority areas such as trade, the digital economy, investment, and vocational training, aligning with Sri Lanka’s national development priorities.

Focus on Economic Transformation and Investment

A central feature of the visit is the Business Forum, chaired by President Dissanayake and organized by the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK). Here, the President will spotlight Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic transformation, highlight emerging investment opportunities, and outline the country’s growth potential. The forum aims to attract German investors and foster new avenues for bilateral trade, underscoring Sri Lanka’s commitment to economic reform and international partnerships.

Engagement with Tourism Sector and Sri Lankan Community

Beyond economic discussions, President Dissanayake will engage with representatives from Germany’s tourism and travel industry associations. With Germany being a significant source of tourists to Sri Lanka, these meetings are expected to boost the island nation’s profile as a secure and attractive destination. The President will also meet with members of the Sri Lankan community residing in Germany, strengthening people-to-people ties.

Delegation and Strategic Priorities

Accompanying President Dissanayake is Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, along with a delegation of senior government officials. The visit reflects Sri Lanka’s broader strategy to enhance international cooperation, attract foreign investment, and promote sustainable development.

A Longstanding Partnership

Germany and Sri Lanka have maintained diplomatic relations since 1953. The two countries collaborate on a range of initiatives, including maritime security, education, and civil society projects, with Germany recognized as a reliable partner in Sri Lanka’s development journey.

This state visit is poised to open new chapters in Sri Lanka-Germany relations, fostering greater collaboration and mutual prosperity in the years ahead
