In a significant escalation of Nepal’s drive against high level corruption, the Department of Money Laundering Investigation (DMLI) has launched a formal inquiry into former prime ministers Sher Bahadur Deuba and Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda,' along with immediate past energy minister Deepak Khadka. The investigation was initiated following the social media circulation of viral videos showing large bundles of burned and scattered banknotes at the politicians' residences after they were attacked by 'Gen-Z' protesters earlier this month.
The DMLI is tasked with determining the source and legitimacy of the suspicious funds, acting on a promise by the interim government to vigorously pursue accountability for illegal wealth accumulation. The inquiry against the two powerful political figures marks an unprecedented action in Nepal’s history of corruption investigations. DMLI investigators have already collected physical evidence, including fragments of burnt currency notes and ashes, from the residences of Deuba and Khadka in Kathmandu, as well as Dahal's home, with samples sent for forensic analysis. Both former prime ministers have faced long standing public allegations of amassing illicit wealth and protecting corruption during their multiple tenures in power, with Dahal facing scrutiny over the alleged embezzlement of funds related to Maoist combatants and Deuba facing accusations related to various corruption scandals. The investigation into former Energy Minister Khadka reportedly centers on alleged irregularities in awarding hydropower licenses and contracts. This move to investigate top-tier political leaders comes at a time of intense public demand for systemic change following the mass anti-corruption protests that led to the recent collapse of the previous government.
