Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has commenced an official, four day visit to Japan following his participation in the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, signaling a strong focus on economic diplomacy and strengthening ties with key global partners. The President departed the US on September 25 and arrived in Japan on September 27 at the invitation of the Japanese government. His first engagement was attending the "Sri Lanka Day" celebrations at EXPO 2025 Osaka, an event designed to showcase the island nation’s rich cultural heritage, unique tourist destinations, and economic potential, including Ceylon tea and gemstones, to a vast international audience. Addressing the gathering at the Expo, President Dissanayake highlighted Sri Lanka's commitment to building a sustainable and inclusive economy for all citizens and expressed gratitude for Japan's invaluable, long standing support during challenging times. The comprehensive itinerary for the visit, running until September 30, includes a formal audience with His Majesty the Emperor of Japan and a crucial summit meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba, where discussions are expected to cover development cooperation, trade facilitation, and investment opportunities. Furthermore, the President is scheduled to address a major Business Forum in Tokyo to court key Japanese investors and will also meet with members of the Sri Lankan expatriate community residing in the country. Accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, and other senior officials, the visit underscores the government’s sustained effort to secure international partnerships and reassure the global community of Sri Lanka's stability as it undergoes a decisive economic transformation.
