Bangladeshi Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus departed early Monday morning from Dhaka to New York to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Flying out of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Yunus is leading a delegation that includes five prominent political leaders from BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and National Citizen Party. He is scheduled to address the General Assembly on September 26, where he is expected to highlight the interim government's reform initiatives, the aspirations behind the July 2024 mass uprising, and the commitment to holding free, fair, and inclusive elections set for February 2026.
The 2025 UNGA session holds special significance for Bangladesh, especially as it will host a first ever High Level Conference on the situation of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar, a move initiated by Yunus last year with unanimous support from member states. Prior to this, Bangladesh convened the inaugural "Stakeholders' Dialogue" in Cox's Bazar with international partners and Rohingya representatives.
Apart from his General Assembly address, Yunus will participate in the High Level Meeting commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the World Programme of Action for Youth, and contribute to discussions on Women, Peace, and Security, underscoring Bangladesh’s role as a leading peacekeeping nation. His speech will also touch on global concerns such as climate change, peacekeeping, climate justice, sustainable development goals, illicit financial flows, migrant rights, and calls for ceasefire and lasting peace in conflict zones like Palestine.
During his visit, the Chief Adviser will attend multiple high profile events, including receptions hosted by the UN Secretary General and the US President, alongside bilateral meetings with global leaders. Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain will accompany the delegation to represent Bangladesh in multilateral meetings covering Commonwealth affairs, peacebuilding, G77 and China, OIC coordination, BIMSTEC, CICA, and the LDC Ministerial forums.
Professor Yunus is expected to return to Dhaka on October 2, concluding a pivotal diplomatic mission aimed at strengthening Bangladesh’s international presence and advancing its key political and humanitarian priorities on the global stage.
