A devastating tragedy struck in India on Tuesday afternoon when a private passenger bus was engulfed in a ferocious fire, resulting in the horrific deaths of 20 people and critically injuring 16 others. The air conditioned sleeper bus, carrying approximately 57 passengers, had barely begun its journey from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur when it turned into a raging inferno near Thaiyat village, in the state of Rajasthan.
The incident occurred around 3:00 PM after the bus had departed Jaisalmer. Preliminary reports from officials and witnesses suggest that thick smoke began emanating from the rear of the vehicle, which was reportedly a new bus that had recently been modified from non-AC to AC. Though the driver quickly stopped the vehicle, the flames spread with terrifying speed, believed to be triggered by a possible short circuit in the air conditioning system or electrical wiring which may have ignited a gas leak or inflammable materials. The intensity of the blaze and the alleged trapping of passengers due to the rapid spread of fire near the exits left many little chance to escape.
Local villagers, passers by, and nearby Army personnel were the first responders, rushing to the scene to assist in rescue operations before fire tenders and police arrived. They have attempted to douse the flames and pull out those trapped, but the bus was quickly reduced to a charred wreckage. Nineteen passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, with one of the sixteen critically injured later succumbing to severe burn injuries while being transferred to a hospital in Jodhpur for advanced treatment. The injured, many of whom have sustained up to 70% burns, are currently receiving care in Jaisalmer and Jodhpur hospitals.
The identification of the deceased has become a complex and heartbreaking task, as many bodies were burned beyond recognition. Authorities have transported the remains to Jodhpur, where DNA verification will be required to confirm the identities of the victims, who include children. The District Administration has issued an urgent appeal for families of missing passengers to come forward.
The tragic event has drawn nationwide condolences. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief and has announced an ex gratia for the both killed and injured. Rajasthan Chief Minister has visited the accident site and later met the injured in Jodhpur, assuring full support and proper medical care. A thorough investigation has been launched by the police and forensic experts to ascertain the exact cause of the catastrophic fire and examine potential lapses in the bus's safety compliance, particularly concerning its recent modifications. The tragedy has reignited serious concerns regarding road safety standards and the inspection protocols for public transport vehicles across the state.
