Bangladesh and China on Saturday celebrated the 50th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations, an occasion marked by an exchange of congratulatory messages between the two nations' top leaders and a renewed commitment to their Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin exchanged messages, highlighting five decades of enduring friendship and mutual cooperation. President Xi Jinping noted that China and Bangladesh are "traditional friendly neighbors" whose relations have consistently been guided by the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, setting an example of mutual respect and win-win cooperation despite changes in the international landscape. President Xi emphasized his readiness to use this milestone to "carry forward the traditional friendship, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, and promote common development" for the greater welfare of the two peoples.
In his message, President Mohammed Shahabuddin underscored the "deep friendship based on mutual respect and trust" that has yielded "tangible benefits" for both populations. He expressed Bangladesh's high appreciation for China's "important role in promoting regional peace, stability and shared prosperity" and for its "long-term valuable support" for Bangladesh's sustainable development.
The high-level exchanges continued with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Bangladeshi interim government's Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus also trading congratulatory remarks. Premier Li expressed China's commitment to "accelerate high-quality Belt and Road cooperation" and advance collaboration across diverse sectors. Chief Adviser Yunus celebrated the "fruitful results" of bilateral cooperation over the past 50 years and reaffirmed Bangladesh's dedication to achieving new milestones in the comprehensive strategic partnership.
Over the past decades, the bilateral relationship has deepened significantly, moving beyond traditional trade and infrastructure to key areas like clean energy, digital economy, and industrial cooperation. Notably, Chinese investment, technology, and engineering expertise are playing a crucial role in Bangladesh's burgeoning energy sector, particularly in large scale solar and wind projects, in line with the nation's goal to generate 30% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2040. Furthermore, cooperation is expanding into water resource management, the blue economy, and people-to-people exchanges, which are jointly being celebrated as the Year of China-Bangladesh People-to-People Exchanges in 2025. The celebrations reflect a powerful bond and a shared vision for a future defined by continued development and strategic partnership in the region.
