Deadly Militant Attack Hits Police Training Centre in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province; 7 Officers Dead
A coordinated and heavily armed militant attack on the Ratta Kulachi Police Training School in Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, late Friday night resulted in the deaths of at least seven police personnel and six terrorists. The assault, which involved a massive initial explosion followed by a prolonged gun battle, underscores the persistent security challenges in the region.
The attack began when terrorists rammed an explosives laden vehicle into the training school's main gate, triggering a colossal blast that caused part of the boundary wall to collapse. Immediately following the explosion, militants-some reportedly in uniform-stormed the compound and opened indiscriminate fire, utilizing automatic weapons and hand grenades against the stationed security forces.
Police and elite forces responded swiftly, engaging the attackers in a fierce firefight that lasted approximately five hours. Officials confirmed that all six terrorists were ultimately eliminated during the operation, and security forces recovered suicide vests, explosives, and modern weaponry from their possession. In addition to the seven police officers who lost their lives, thirteen others sustained injuries and were promptly transported to nearby hospitals. Approximately 200 recruits, instructors, and staff were present at the facility but were safely evacuated to secure locations, according to officials.
The attack drew strong condemnation from the highest levels of the government. Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the terrorist attack in separate statements.
President Zardari paid tribute to the martyred personnel, saying they "set a great example by sacrificing their lives to protect the homeland," and asserted that the "nation and security forces will remain united until terrorism is completely stamped out."
Prime Minister Sharif offered condolences and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. In his statement, he reaffirmed the government's resolve, stating that "such kind of cowardly acts by the terrorists cannot shake our unwavering resolve against terrorism," and lauded the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police for always being "on the frontline in the fight against terrorism."
Inspector General of Police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Zulfiqar Hameed, confirmed that the area has been completely cleared, and a search and clean up operation is now underway to ensure no lingering threat remains. The IGP praised the leadership and bravery of the officers involved in the successful operation and announced rewards for the personnel who took part. The banned outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) initially claimed responsibility for the assault before later issuing a second statement denying involvement. The latest violence follows a surge in militant activity across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a region bordering Afghanistan, with targets predominantly focusing on law enforcement agencies and security forces.
