Mega Narcotics Haul Seized Off Sri Lanka's Tangalle Coast: Navy Intercepts Over 839KG of Illicit Drugs
The Sri Lanka Navy, in a significant maritime drug bust, successfully intercepted and seized a massive consignment of narcotics found floating in the sea off the coast of Tangalle on Monday, October 14. The operation resulted in the recovery of 51 bags containing over 839 kilograms of illicit substances, dealing a major blow to international drug trafficking networks.
The total weight of the seized narcotics amounted to precisely 839kg and 254g. The consignment was revealed to be a deadly mixture of drugs, including a staggering 670kg and 676g of Crystal Methamphetamine (Ice), 156kg and 542g of Heroin, and 12kg and 36g of Hashish. The immense street value of this haul, currently under calculation, is expected to be one of the largest seizures of its kind this year.
Naval patrol units discovered the packages, securely wrapped and waterproofed in 51 separate bags, adrift in the deep sea following a concerted intelligence operation. This method of concealment suggests a typical mid-sea transaction, where the drugs are either jettisoned for later retrieval or transferred between larger foreign vessels and smaller local fishing trawlers.
The seized drugs have been transported to a high security facility and formally handed over to the Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB) for further laboratory analysis and legal proceedings. Authorities have launched an extensive investigation to trace the origins of the narcotics, identify the vessels involved in the sea-dumping, and apprehend the local kingpins intended to collect and distribute the massive shipment across the island. The operation underscores the unrelenting efforts of Sri Lankan security forces to safeguard the nation’s maritime zones and combat the increasing threat of drug influx via sea routes.
