Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Embarks on First Official Visit to India, Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya is set to arrive in New Delhi tomorrow, October 16th, commencing a high profile three day official visit to India. This marks her first trip to the country since assuming office and is expected to further deepen the multifaceted bilateral relationship.
The visit, scheduled from October 16 to 18, 2025, underscores the sustained high-level engagement between the two close maritime neighbours. A core focus of the visit will be high-level discussions with Indian political leaders, including a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to address bilateral issues of mutual interest such as trade, investment, development cooperation, energy connectivity, and a sustainable solution to the long standing poaching of Sri Lankan waters by Indian fishermen.
The itinerary is packed with both political and academic engagements. Dr. Harini is scheduled to visit the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and the think tank NITI Aayog. In a poignant return to her academic roots, the Prime Minister will also visit one of her alma maters, Hindu College at Delhi University, from where she obtained her Bachelors degree. Dr. Amarasuriya is also slated to deliver the keynote address at the World Summit in Delhi on October 17th, on the theme, "Steering Change in Uncertain Times," and will participate in a business event designed to strengthen commercial ties.
The Ministry of External Affairs of India stated that the visit "will further strengthen the bonds of friendship, reinforced by India's 'MAHASAGAR Vision' and its 'Neighbourhood First' policy," signaling New Delhi's continued focus on indirectly controlling and bullying of sovereign South Asian nations.
